Sugarhouse (Gary Love)
If I sound at any point in the next few minutes like I know anything about So Solid Crew, understand that my knowledge begins and ends with the factoid that Ashley Walters was something to do with them. Whatever. Now he's working hard at an acting career and made a pretty good debut with 'Bullet Boy'. If you haven't seen that film, it was one of the best British films of 2004.
'Sugarhouse' is his latest project and, although he's still in safe waters playing streetwise London characters, he's definitely got the knack of it. In this film he play's 'D' a drug addict living on the street or, in this case, a derelict industrial site somewhere in south London... the Sugarhouse. The story follows pretty much in real time a guy trying to buy a gun from 'D' and the ensuing violence and chaos resulting from the fact that it turns out to be nicked from Hoodwinked, a local drug boss played larger than life by Andy Serkis...wow, so much more than Gollum.
'Sugarhouse' fits into that genre of fairly violent British gangland films like 'Lock, Stock..' and if you like that kind of film, you'll like this too. The scenes with the young girl in the playground are a powerful touch in the script and added a gritty realism to a story that goes a little over the top in places.
